Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on some of the country’s biggest music stars and wealthy celebrities to use their success and financial resources to make a greater impact on the lives of struggling Nigerians.
Speaking during the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Lokoja, Kogi State, the First Lady appealed directly to internationally acclaimed artists such as Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, and other influential Nigerians, urging them to establish charitable foundations and expand initiatives that provide meaningful support for vulnerable citizens.
According to her, while the government continues to implement social intervention programmes aimed at reducing poverty and improving food security, the responsibility of caring for the less privileged should not rest on the government alone. She stressed that successful individuals who have benefited immensely from the nation’s opportunities also have a moral responsibility to give back to society.
Oluremi Tinubu noted that there is nothing wrong with enjoying the rewards of hard work and success, including owning luxury vehicles and living comfortably. However, she emphasized that genuine success should also be reflected in acts of generosity and compassion toward those facing economic hardship.
She encouraged wealthy entertainers to channel part of their wealth into structured humanitarian projects such as scholarship programmes, healthcare initiatives, food assistance, skills acquisition centres, youth empowerment, and community development projects that can create lasting change.
The First Lady also pointed to international music star Akon as an example of a celebrity who has invested significantly in humanitarian and development projects across Africa. She challenged Nigerian celebrities to build similar legacies by using their influence to improve the lives of ordinary citizens beyond entertainment.
Her remarks come at a time when millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with rising food prices, inflation, unemployment, and increasing economic pressure. The appeal has already generated widespread discussion on social media, with many Nigerians supporting the call for greater corporate and celebrity social responsibility, while others argue that government policies remain the primary solution to addressing poverty.
As conversations continue across the country, the First Lady’s message has reignited the debate over the role of wealthy individuals, celebrities, and private organizations in complementing government efforts to tackle poverty and improve the welfare of citizens.
