Wildfire Smoke Blankets North America as Air Quality Worsens Across Canada and the U.S.

📰 ENS NEWS Blog Article

Millions of people across Canada and the United States are experiencing hazardous air quality as smoke from hundreds of active Canadian wildfires spreads across the continent.

The smoke has affected major cities including Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia, prompting health officials to issue air quality warnings and urge residents to limit outdoor activities. According to recent reports, more than 800 wildfires remain active across Canada, with many still considered out of control.

The thick smoke contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can travel deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Health experts warn that exposure may increase the risk of breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, heart complications, and eye irritation. Children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with existing heart or lung conditions are considered most vulnerable.

Authorities have advised residents to:

  • Stay indoors whenever possible.
  • Keep windows and doors closed.
  • Use air purifiers if available.
  • Wear a properly fitted N95 mask when outside.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor exercise until air quality improves.

The smoke has also disrupted daily life, with sporting events postponed, flights affected in some areas, and visibility significantly reduced. Meteorologists expect weather conditions to determine how quickly the smoke disperses over the coming days.

Scientists continue to point to hotter and drier conditions as factors that can contribute to more frequent and intense wildfire seasons, highlighting the growing challenges posed by extreme weather.
