ABUJA, Nigeria — August 9, 2026: Nigerian security forces have rescued 33 passengers kidnapped by armed attackers in Zamfara State, following a rapid military operation in the country’s troubled northwest region.
The rescue operation was carried out by troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, working alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
Troops Confront Kidnappers
According to the Joint Task Force North-West, security personnel received information about the kidnapping during the late afternoon of August 8.
By the time troops reached the area, the attackers had already begun moving the passengers toward an unknown location away from the highway.
The security forces engaged the kidnappers in a firefight, forcing them to abandon their captives and escape into surrounding bushes. All 33 kidnapped passengers were recovered safely, and authorities reported no casualties among those rescued.
Military authorities said operations were subsequently expanded in an attempt to track down the fleeing attackers.
Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja said the security forces were continuing efforts to locate those responsible for the kidnapping. The military has not publicly identified the particular armed group behind the attack.
