A teenage domestic worker has been rescued by police in Rivers State after she was allegedly confined inside a bathroom or toilet at a residence in Abuloma, Port Harcourt, prompting the arrest of the couple she had been living with.
The incident has generated concern over the treatment of domestic workers, particularly children and teenagers who may be placed in homes far away from their families and depend heavily on their employers for food, shelter, education and personal safety.
According to the Rivers State Police Command, officers from the Abuloma Police Division intervened after receiving information that the teenager had allegedly been confined inside the residence. Police subsequently rescued her and arrested the husband and wife connected to the case while an investigation was opened to establish exactly what happened.
Police confirm rescue in Abuloma
Police accounts indicate that information about the teenager’s situation reached the Abuloma Police Division on September 13, 2026.
According to the command’s spokesperson, officers responded to the report, went to the property and removed the teenager from the situation.
The couple she had been staying with were then taken into custody as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged confinement.
Reports about the case initially described the teenager as a 15-year-old domestic worker. A later account attributed to the Rivers State Police Command described her as 16 years old and identified her as Joy. Because reports differ on her exact age and name, the most important confirmed point is that the individual involved is a teenage girl who was working or living as a domestic worker in the household.
